Dr Sindy Joyce

Sindy is a Mincéir/Traveller, a Sociologist, Human Right Defender (HRD),a member of President Michael D. Higgins Council of State and lecturer in Traveller Studies in UL. Her research focuses on Human Rights, racism, hate crime, ethnicity/identity, and social/political constructions of Irish Travellers. She was named as one of the ‘50 brilliant Irish women who inspired us in 2018’ by the Daily Edge. Her PhD thesis ‘Mincéirs Siúladh: An ethnographic study of young Travellers’ experiences of racism in an Irish city’ examined how anti-Traveller racism shapes young people’s use of, and movement through, public space.
